The Commission has been monitoring media reports of the race based attack which occurred at the World of Golf. Although it has not yet received an instruction or complaint from the victim (Maluleke), it has received a complaint from two members of the public.

The South African Human Rights Commission has noted with concern and shock reports of the death of a young Northern Cape woman Gabaediwe Motsage after she was allegedly tortured, physically assaulted and burned at an initiation school in Hartswater, along the border with the North West Province.

In South Africa brutal attacks and abuse including physical and sexual abuse against older persons, primarily women, are rife. The recent incident where an 84 year old woman from Pine Town, Durban was attacked by four youths who broke into her home on Christmas Day is yet another troubling case that begs the need to ensure adequate protection of older persons.
