The South African Human Rights Commission and its legal representatives at the Marikana Commission of Inquiry, Centre for Applied Legal Studies are deeply concerned at the withdrawal of five parties to the Marikana Commission of Inquiry.
The SAHRC and CALS respect the decisions of those parties and share their concerns at the absence of statefunding for the injured and arrested individuals of the Marikana tragedy.

The South African Human Rights Commission expresses immense concern at the rise in incidents of corporal punishment in schools across the country. The Commission has received complaints and has noted instances where the violence committed by educators against learners extends far beyond the ambit of the definition of corporal punishment. These include instances where children were severely humiliated, grievously injured, left disabled, or did not survive their injuries.

The South African Human Rights Commission has completed its investigations into water and sanitation situation in five (5) Municipalities in the Free State Province. Reports with the findings and recommendations for all these five municipalities have been completed and will be released next week, Wednesday 10 July 2013 in Bloemfontein.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) has noted reports that allege that African National Congress Western Cape Provincial Chairman, Marius Fransman has “snubbed” the meeting arranged by the Commission as part of its investigation in a dispute between Mr Fransman and the South African Jewish Board of Deputieis (SAJBD).

On Friday 07 June 2013, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) conducted a site inspection of some of the areas in Cape Town affected by the current sanitation crisis most notably, Gugulethu‘s informal settlements of Kanna, Barcelona and Europe.  The Commission is deeply concerned about the state of sanitation in these areas and believes that the current crisis poses a significant health risk particularly to vulnerable communities.
