The South African Human Rights Commission has found that the rights of Qwaqwa residents in the Free State province were violated during the process to evict of hundreds of residents who occupied a farm in the Bokamoso area.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) received complaints about violations to the rights to dignity and equality from James French, Alice Choe, Mongezi Mahlangu and Mome Mahlangu. The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) found that the Kopanong Local Municipality, in the Free State violated the resident’s right to human dignity by its failure to provide safe and sustainable water supply fundamental for a healthy, productive and dignified life. The Municipality has been given 18 months to implement turnaround strategy to fix the water crisis.
