The South African Human Rights Commission presented a submission to Parliament’s Select Committee on Security and Constitutional Development after it received a request from the Committee to present a human rights perspective to the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Bill also known as the ‘DNA’ Bill.  Earlier this year, the Commission provided a submission on the original draft of the Bill to the Portfolio Committee on Police.

In light of today's ruling by the Constitutional Court, dismissing the application of the injured and arrested miners of Marikana, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is heartened by the clear message sent by the Constitutional Court in relation to the fairness of proceedings without funding for the injured and arrested miners.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is pleased that the Marikana Commission of Inquiry has been stood down until Thursday. The SAHRC calls on the Commission, government and all parties to use the break in proceedings to find a funding solution that will allow those injured and arrested at Marikana on 16 August 2012 to continue to take part in the Commission process.
