ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission, alongside People Against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty (“PASSOP”) and 39 detained foreign nationals have, through our attorneys from the Legal Resources Centre, launched an urgent court application against the Department of Home Affairs for continuing to violate the rights of immigrants at the Lindela Repatriation Centre by detaining them for longer than the prescribed 120 day period allowed in terms of the Immigration Act.

The South African Human Rights Commission has completed and made a finding following its investigation into the 2011 killing of Andries Tatane, an activist from Ficksburg in the Free State Province. The report we are releasing today, contains findings pursuant to an investigation into allegations that human rights of a citizen were violated in the course of a public protest.

The South African Human Rights Commission was commended by the United Nations Human Rights Council for being among the first stakeholders to deliver a video statement at the Council.
