Tomorrow, 29 August 2019, the Equality Court sitting in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court will hear the South African Human Rights Commission’s (“the Commission”) hate speech case against Mr Adam Catzavelos. This application by the Commission follows Mr Catzavelos self-recorded video in which he makes racist remarks.

Over the years, the SAHRC Mpumalanga Provincial Office has received numerous complaints regarding undocumented learners, who have been denied access to schools due to lack of documentation. The Commission considers this continuing conduct from some schools as a gross violation of the rights of children enshrined in the Constitution.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”), Mpumalanga Provincial Office will be conducting information sessions on the rights of women under the theme: “Fighting Gender-based Violence against Women.” Women and girls continue to experience violence in their daily lives. They are beaten, coerced into sex or abused usually by someone they know or by a stranger. Almost every day, women and children are raped and killed in the province.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”), Western Cape Provincial Office, will be visiting facilities accommodating the elderly in the cape metro district to conduct monitoring of the facilities, this will also include information sessions to amplify basic human rights awareness enshrined in Chapter 2 of the Constitution – the Bill of Rights. The information sessions are centered under the theme “Know Your Rights and Responsibilities”.
