Today, the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) application will be heard in the Western Cape High Court for a declaratory order to declare that the failure of the City of Cape Town to provide appropriate alternative accommodation to families of the Klein Akker community, Kraaifontein, prior to eviction, as well as the way in which the eviction was carried out by the property owner, Odvest 182 (Pty) Ltd, amounted to a violation of various human rights.

The Commissioner responsible for civil and political rights at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Mr. Chris Nissen will be conducting a Provincial Visit in the North West Province from 19 – 22 August 2019. The purpose of the visit is to assess the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty in the province.

The Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Adv. Bongani Majola will be conducting a Provincial Visit in the Mpumalanga Province from 19 – 23 August 2019. The purpose of the visit is to assess the status of public health care facilities in the province. This is in line with the Commission’s mandate contained in Section 184(1) (b) of the Constitution, which obliges the Commission to promote the protection of human rights, monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic of South Africa.

Tomorrow, the 9^th August 2019, is National Women’s Day in South Africa. The day holds great historical significance in the establishment of South Africa’s constitutional democracy. The day commemorates the famous 1956 Women’s March against repressive pass laws, and generaly against the oppression and subjugation of women.
