Don't leave people with disabilities behind

06 September 2018

"You can judge a nation by the way it treats its most vulnerable citizens." This quote has been credited to a variety of prominent historic figures such as Aristotle and Mahatma Ghandi. It has also evolved with time and has been applied in differing contexts.
Within the South African context, former president Thabo Mbeki also made reference to it. He wrote that one of the yardsticks by which to measure a society's respect for human rights, and to evaluate its level of maturity and generosity of spirit, is the status it accords to the most vulnerable members of society such as disabled people, senior citizens and children.

"The quality of drinking water in Hammanskraal and surrounding areas has improved and no longer has an odour and a brown colour, following reports of suspected cholera contamination in the area around June this year. The city had resorted to supplying water through tankers even though the reports were dismissed after tests proved that there was no trace of cholera in the water," the city said in a statement.

There are simply not enough inspectors to check on the food being sold by spaza shops in parts of Gauteng.
That was the message conveyed to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Wednesday as it held a two-day inquiry into claims that foreign national shop owners were selling counterfeit or expired food.
A panel of different stakeholders will seek to unpack what prompted recent attacks on several shop owners.
Jerry Chaka from the city of Ekurhuleni said samples of questionable food‚ confiscated during an inspection in the Tembisa area a week ago‚ had been sent to the National Health Laboratory Services.
