'Racism is a daily thing in Hartbeespoort'

Over 150 residents of Hartbeespoort on Friday marched to deliver a memorandum of demands at the local police station.
The residents are demanding that racism stop in the community.
Azania Mosaka spoke to Hartbeespoort Community Development Initiative spokesperson Russel Baloyi about their experiences in the community.

Call for probe into old age home

A SOURCE who is concerned about the operations of a local old age home in Kokstad has informed the Fever about the deaths of 11 elderly residents within the space of eight months.
The source also showed the Fever a document with a list of residents who died on the premises and others who died in hospital.
“I started my investigation last month when I wanted to deliver food to the residents at the home. I was told that the number of residents was not the same as the number I was given earlier this year.

Westville CPF slammed for targeting beggars

Durban - A Westville resident has filed a complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), slamming a plan to fingerprint beggars and vagrants in a bid to maintain a database as unconstitutional.
Kiru Naidoo filed the complaint with the SAHRC earlier this month, after the Westville Community Policing Forum (CPF) published details of the joint plan with the Westville SAPS on its Facebook page.

SAHRC intervention halts farm evictions

Various farm worker evictions in the Mossel Bay area have been halted thanks to intervention from the SA Human Rights Commission. One of the incidents saw a farmer attempting to bulldoze a worker’s him while he and his wife were still inside. SAHRC Western Cape Provincial Manager,  Lloyd Lotz spoke to Spektrum. The South African Defence Force (SANDF) has been roped in to assist in the fight to end the Vaal River water crisis.

Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, announced during his inaugural Medium Term Budget Policy Statement that President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Defence, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, have agreed to have the military assist with engineering and other expertise to help fix the problem. Mboweni says Treasury is dealing decisively and urgently with the water crisis. He explained that they will be doing this by mobilising short-term financing by reprioritising funds and increasing capacity. The newly appointed Finance Minister stresses that “water is critical and that current water delivery models are not working in many cases”.
