The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has come out in support of the reopening of schools in the country.
The commission said on Wednesday it “supports the position of Unicef that children should return to schools as soon as possible because ‘evidence points to harm being done to children by not being in school'.”

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) intends taking the City of Cape Town to court over its eviction policy following the forced removal of a naked man from his shack in Khayelitsha on Wednesday.
"There is absolutely no excuse for what happened," said SAHRC commissioner Chris Nissen on Thursday.

Durban - DA parliamentarian Dianne Kohler Barnard has lodged a hate speech complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) regarding social media posts calling for the killing of white farmers and land grabs.
Barnard said the DA had referred at least six social media posts, which “seemingly glorify farm murders and attacks” to the SAHRC for an investigation into hate speech.

DURBAN - The National Teachers Union (Natu) on Tuesday said it had partnered with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to conduct a survey of teachers’ concerns ahead of the return of more learners to schools next week.
Grades 1, 2, 3, 6, 10 and 11 will be able to return to classes from Monday.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has said that the decision not to reinstate fully the national school nutrition programme (NSNP), which has been suspended since the hard lockdown began in March, is catastrophic for learners from poor backgrounds.

Cape Town – The Parklands College history teacher behind the controversial “racist task” requiring Grade 7 pupils to design a poster to advertise a slave auction has resigned from the independent school.
The resignation comes as the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said it would probe, with the Independent Schools’ Association of SA saying that it would weigh in on the matter tomorrow, while the EFF called for a broader investigation into racism at schools across the Western Cape.

The Chapter Nine institution intervened after being approached by teachers' unions. According to the unions, their call for provinces to provide enough protective equipment to all schools had fallen on deaf ears.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has confirmed that the Minister of Basic Education has come back to the Chapter 9 institution with revised back-to-school directions, which are expected to be gazetted on Friday.
This after the SAHRC said it would consider going to court to ensure the ministry gazetted new regulations this week to address the ability of some poorer schools to comply with Covid-19 regulations.

The Human Rights Commission and several other groups have expressed strong opposition to the reopening plan, which appears now to be on ice again as the country awaits a briefing from the minister at 6pm.
According to a report in the Sunday Times, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to announce that the reopening of schools nationally for Grade 7 and 12 learners will be delayed for at least a week, backtracking on all previous announcements.
