Durban – EFF leader Julius Malema has been given 10 days to retract statements made during a recent rally in the Western Cape.

The South African Human Rights Commission said it had served Malema and the EFF with a written notice that if they did not retract and apologise for the prima facie unlawful statements, as well as give the appropriate undertakings to desist from further promotion of hatred and violence on any ground, the Commission would proceed to the Equality Court for relief.

SAHRC monitoring KZN flood victims

2 November 2022

Responding to the complaints, the SAHRC through its KZN provincial office (KZNPO) said it has been monitoring what's happening with a view to protecting the rights of flood victims.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) said it is monitoring what’s happening to the April flood victims in KwaZulu-Natal to protect their rights.

This comes after the DA staged a protest outside the SAHRC’s Durban offices on Monday morning, to bring attention to the plight of the thousands of KwaZulu-Natal residents who were left homeless, saying the SAHRC has turned a blind eye to the inhumane conditions under which the victims of the April floods live.

The Economic Freedom Fighters and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will probably head to the equality court after the EFF called for a neutral body to consider allegations of hate speech and incitement of violence against its leader, Julius Malema.

This week, the commission said recent statements by Malema and on EFF banners “constitute incitement of violence, hate speech and possibly other transgressions of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 4 of 2000”.

Research tells us that there is a direct link between poverty and child and adolescent mental health. The circumstances in which children and adolescents live have a significant impact on their mental health — both in childhood and adulthood.

On the other hand, living with a mental health challenge, in turn increases the risk of descending into or staying in poverty. A vicious cycle is born. In a society where the majority still live below the poverty line, being able to maintain good mental health is fundamental to ending the cycle of poverty.
