The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/ the Commission), together with TransHope and the Hate Crimes Working Group represented by Lawyers for Human Rights, welcomes the order granted by the Johannesburg High Court, sitting as an Equality Court on 19 June 2026 in the matter against Mr Ngizwe Mchunu.
Prior to instituting litigation, the Commission sought to resolve the matter directly with Mr Mchunu demanding amongst others that he ceases publishing or promoting content amounting to hate speech or discrimination against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual/Aromantic (LGBTQIA)+ persons, to remove all offending material from his platforms within 24 hours, and to issue a public retraction and apology acknowledging the harm caused. However, Mr Mchunu rejected the Commission’s demands, refused to apologise and publicly stated that he stood by his remarks.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/ the Commission) Eastern Cape Office (EPO) will launch its Investigation Report into systemic human rights concerns relating to governance and service delivery challenges within Makana Municipality on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. The report forms part of the Commission’s constitutional mandate to promote, protect, and monitor the realisation of human rights in South Africa. As the country’s independent watchdog on human rights, the SAHRC is tasked with assessing government compliance with constitutional and legislative obligations, particularly where governance failures adversely affect the dignity, wellbeing, and socio-economic rights of communities.

National Youth Day represents one of the darkest chapters in the history of human rights. It reminds the country of 16 June 1976, when hundreds of students were killed by the Apartheid regime while protesting the oppressive Bantu Education Act and the forced imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. The South African Human Rights Commission (‘the Commission’) joins the country in commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising by highlighting its work to address the human rights challenges currently facing the youth.
