This is according to a report on equality released by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Thursday, Business Day reported.

The SA Human Rights Commission has criticised government for its decision to raise the Value-Added Tax (VAT) rate by the one percentage point in April, arguing it is a regressive tax hike that appears to be 'constitutionally suspect'.
The VAT rate was raised from 14% to 15% on April 1, 2018, the first change since 1993.

According to the latest report from the commission, 64% of black South Africans are living in poverty compared to 41% of coloured people, 6% of Indian people and just 1% of white people.
