In May 2024, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission) in the Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO), was alerted through various media publications to an incident during a protest at Walter Sisulu University (WSU). In this incident, nine (9) students were injured by rubber bullets allegedly fired by the South African Police Services (SAPS) and security personnel. Some reports indicated the use of live ammunition to disperse the crowds. These reports alleged that the crowd management methods employed were excessive and fll outside of the prescripts of the empowering legislation.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/ the Commission) welcomes the recent High Court ruling regarding the demolition of the Enyobeni Tavern. This decision aligns with the findings from the SAHRC’s Enyobeni Final Report issued on 23 April 2024. The ruling highlights the need for stricter enforcement of regulations following the tragic loss of young lives at the tavern, which demonstrated the serious consequences of failing to comply with regulations.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will be conducting a community outreach in the form of an information session at the Kruger National Park, on the role and mandate of the Commission. The activity will also serve to promote human rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.  It further endeavours to empower surrounding communities to assert their rights and hold relevant authorities to account in addressing poor service delivery, crime and other social ills in society.
