The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) Eastern Cape provincial office will hold a world water day, calendar day dialogue, on 29 March 2021. The Commission will engage on challenges in the O R Tambo district, relating to access to water, poor quality of water, drought and maintenance/monitoring of water infrastructures.

Today Friday, 26 March 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will visit the Sokhulumi Traditional Authority in Sokhulumi to meet with iKosi Mkhambi Mahlangu of AmaNdebele Ndzudza and the Ndebele activist, Thando Mahlangu, who was ordered to leave Boulders Mall due to his traditional attire.

Media Statement: South African Human Rights Commission initiates investigation into alleged prohibition of the use of languages at Stellenbosch University
Attention: Editors and Reporters
The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission” or “SAHRC”) has received a number of complaints alleging that students at the University of Stellenbosch (“SU”) are being prevented from communicating in selected languages. The complaints received relate specifically to the use of Afrikaans. The Commission however seeks to understand the extent of this alleged prohibition.

The South African Human Rights Commission, Mpumalanga office shall in collaboration with the Mbombela Aids Council commemorate the World Aids Day (WAD) under the theme: “Zero Discrimination against People Living with HIV/AIDS.”

Today, 22 March 2021, marks World Water Day (WWD), globally. The United Nations General Assembly through the adoption of resolution A/RES/47/193 on 22 December 1992 declared 22 March annual WWD. The aim of WWD is to raise awareness about the importance of water, which is the lifeblood of human existence. The theme for 2021 is “Valuing water”, which is apposite for South Africa given that it is a water scarce country and amongst the driest countries in the world.
