Attention: Editors and Reporters

In commemoration of Human Rights Month in March, the South African Human Rights Commission will be conducting a human rights outreach initiative in three schools in Gauteng. The outreach aims to capacitate learners on their human rights and responsibilities, the significance of Human Rights Day, and highlight the role that young people have played (and continue to play) in shaping the political and economic landscape of the country.

The Mpumalanga Provincial Office (MPO) will be hosting a workshop on the right to equality rolling out the equality toolkit under the theme: “My Rights, Your Rights”. The aim of the workshop is to empower members of the Lesbians Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex Queer (LGBTIQ) community about their right to equality.

Immigration is one of the seven (7) focus areas of work identified by the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) in order to effectively fulfil its mandate of promoting, protecting and monitoring the realisation of human rights in the Republic of South Africa. The increasing incidences of xenophobic violence and unfair discrimination against foreign-nationals have also necessitated that the Commission maintain its focus on immigration issues and the rights of foreign nationals.

Cape Town - Despite the extension of equality courts to magistrate’s courts to attend to matters of equality, communities are still submitting complaints of this nature to the Human Rights Commission.

This emerged during a community engagement on Equality Toolkits on Thursday, where the provincial Human Rights Commission (HRC), in partnership with Langa Community Advice Services, hosted a workshop for community’s stakeholders.

‘Masoyi Monster’ victims yet to be buried

Two victims of the so-called ‘Masoyi Monster’ are yet to be buried. The Mpumalanga High Court found Julius Mndawe guilty on five counts of murder and defeating the ends of justice, last week.

Mndawe killed and buried the women in his yard at the Masoyi Village near Hazyview, between 2018 and 2019.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will on Monday conduct a joint inspection with government in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

The commission will assess progress in implementing directives following its joint report with the Public Protector in July last year, which recommended that government urgently intervene to correct human rights violations in the township.

A child’s sewage-soaked teddy bear lies amid plastic bottles and rotting waste, while an onshore breeze carries the stench of human excrement and rotten eggs to people gathered on the shore.

This was the sight and smell that greeted members of the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and media on a brief inspection of Wemmer Pan, a recreational lake south of Johannesburg’s CBD, on Tuesday.
