Cyril Ramaphosa, appointed Deputy Chief Justice and Chair of the State Capture Inquiry, Raymond Zondo, on Thursday, the 10th March 2022, as South Africa's next Chief Justice. Deputy Chief Justice Zondo, currently acting as Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, will officially assume office as Chief Justice on the 1st April 2022.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (“SAHRC”) Inquiry Into the Right to Basic Education and the Regulation of School Uniforms will commence on 14 March 2022 in Gqeberha until the 16th of March 2022. The Inquiry will be chaired by the area focus Commissioner for basic education, Adv A Gaum and will ventilate whether the perceived over-regulation of the appearances and uniforms of learners constitute towards a violation of their equality, dignity, freedom of expression, best interest as well as basic education rights  The inquiry will hear from a range of participants including civil society organisations Sibanye LGBTI, Access Chapter 2, as well as the Commission for Gender Equality, the Eastern Cape House of Traditional  Leaders, and the SA Hindi Maha Sabha. Several parents of children who were subjected to alleged victimisation will also provide evidence.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Limpopo Provincial Office in collaboration with the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) will conduct a workshop on civil and political rights with a focus on the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).

The South African Human Rights Commission Western Cape provincial office (WCPO) working in collaboration with the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) and the office of the Public Protector South Africa will conduct a capacity building workshop for the Western Cape provincial executive of Community Advice Offices South Africa (CAOSA).   This capacity building workshop is aimed at empowering the CAOSA executive by heightening awareness about human rights and structures that can help with redress for human rights violations with a specific focus on the role of the Chapter Institutions in promoting, monitoring and protecting human rights.

The Mpumalanga Provincial Office (MPO) will be hosting a workshop on the Bill of Rights, the Older Persons Act and the Protocol to the African Charter on People’s Rights on the Rights of Older Persons (“the Protocol”). Adopted in 2016, the Protocol aims to strengthen regional protection for the rights of older persons, providing an opportune moment for older persons to enjoy their full rights and freedoms on an equal basis with other population groups.

On the 10th of March 2022 the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) in the Eastern Cape will be conducting site inspections and monitoring activities at schools within the Gqeberha area. The inspections will be led by the area focus Commissioner for basic education, National Commissioner Adv A Gaum and will focus on infrastructure and racism complaints received from the region.
