The maternity ward that has been under construction at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein for almost a decade, is set to be completed within the next 18 months.

The chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Bongani Majola, told OFM News that they were informed during their oversight visit to determine the Free State’s state of health care, that the province's foremost trauma hospital, the Pelonomi Hospital, will have a completed maternity ward as the reconstruction has resumed. Majola explains that the resumption of the reconstruction comes after a legal battle in court between the department and the previous contractor who had failed to complete the ward.

The Western Cape High Court has ruled that a number of demolitions carried out by the City of Cape Town during the height of the Covid-19 lockdown were illegal.

Judges Vincent Saldanha, Mokgoatji Dolamo and Hayley Slingers declared the City's conduct while carrying out the evictions as "unlawful" and "unconstitutional".

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in the Eastern Cape will next month host an inquiry to find solutions to decrease the prevalence of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) caused by hunger in children.

The commission said on Wednesday it has received complaints, coupled with various media reports, of deaths of children due to SAM.

It said studies and statistics indicated many children in the province were malnourished as a result of living in abject poverty.

Commissioner Philile Ntuli of the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is conducting a provincial visit in the KwaZulu Natal Province from 10 to 12 August 2022.

Following the floods disaster that affected the KwaZulu Natal Province in April 2022, the Commission has conducted a series of monitoring interventions to assess the human rights impact thereof. The monitoring has been geared towards ensuring that the response of the KwaZulu Natal Government to the disaster is based on a human rights approach.

09 August 2022 marks 66 years since the 1956 march that saw about 20 000 women descend on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the introduction of an apartheid pass law which was aimed at restricting black women’s movement in urban areas. The heroic act of defiance led by struggle icons such as Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams saw scores of women from across the country converge at the Union Buildings to deliver a petition containing more than 100,000 signatures calling for the end of this unjust act.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) wishes to inform the media and members of the public that Advocate Tseliso Thipanyane is no longer employed by the Commission. His contract as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Commission expired on 31 May 2022.
