SA reaffirms its commitment to human rights

Marking the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to uphold and champion human rights.

The President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver a keynote address at the 70th anniversary commemoration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event will also be attended by the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Advocate Michael Masutha, as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Michelle Bachelet.

Government will continue to attend to issues of concern to the Khoi and San communities
The Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is continuing to engage the National Khoisan Council (NKC) as part of the implementation of the South African Human Rights Commission Report entitled National Hearings Relating to the Human Rights Situation of the Khoi-San in South Africa, and to promote the rights of the Khoi and San people.

Mashaba, SAHRC reach settlement on Ebola tweets

City of Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has reached a settlement with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) regarding a tweet he posted where he described an informal trader as bringing Ebola in the “name of small business”.On November 12, Mashaba effected a citizen’s arrest in Johannesburg’s CBD on an informal trader who was pushing a trolley of cow heads for sale. The chief of metro police in Johannesburg David Tembe also tweeted details of the arrest, describing the individual as an “undocumented person” and confirming that he would be charged.

On 17 November 2018, the Department of Traditional Affairs (DTA) held a meeting with the National Khoisan Council in Bloemfontein.The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has committed to continue to engage the National Khoisan Council (NKC) as part of the implementation of the South African Human Rights Commission Report on the promotion of rights of the Khoi and San people.
This follows the SAHRC releasing the National Hearings Relating to the Human Rights Situation of the Khoi-San in South Africa report in August.
On 17 November 2018, the Department of Traditional Affairs (DTA) held a meeting with the NKC in Bloemfontein.

The South African Human Rights Commission has now stepped in to investigate allegations of racism at a North West primary school, saying that if children have been discriminated against there will be serious repercussions.
12 January 2019

The South African Human Rights Commission has voiced its unhappiness with an alleged racism incident at Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke. The commission says it wants to investigate the school after a picture showing four black children sitting separately from the white children in a class at the school went viral. Commissioner, Andre Guam says it is every South African's duty to root out racism. Click here for the podcast.

A teacher in South Africa has been suspended and allegations of racism are being investigated in a small town in the country's North West province after a photograph showing black and white children sitting at separate desks went viral.
Twenty-five years after the dawn of democracy in South Africa, the country is still grappling with the specter of apartheid -- a policy that separated citizens based on the color of their skin and prevented the black majority from accessing the same quality of services, including education, as the white minority.
