Disinformation—the deliberate spread of false or misleading information—threatens human rights, affecting freedom of expression, access to accurate information, and the right to participate in public affairs. South Africa has witnessed the dangerous consequences of disinformation in various forms.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/ the Commission) expresses deep concern over the tragic killing of Imam Muhsin Hendricks, widely known as world's 'first openly gay imam' who was fatally shot in Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape on 15 February 2025. Details of his killing emerged via footage which was widely shared on social media over the weekend. The Commission extends its condolences to his family, friends,  and the communities he served.
