Ten years ago, the late Professor Kader Asmal pointed out that all human rights are interdependent and indivisible and that one well-resourced body would better address the human rights needs of especially the most marginalised and vulnerable members of the community. He proposed one human rights body, an idea that is surfacing again in Parliament. It’s taken a while, but goes to show that a good idea does not die. By MOIRA LEVY.

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) has on Thursday urged South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to investigate the mysterious death of a 61-year-old patient who was found dead inside a Stellenbosch hospital ceiling.

SANCO National Spokesperson, Jabu Mahlangu called for security to be beefed up at all Public hospitals, to avoid such incidents in future.
“It is unacceptable for a patient admitted to a public hospital to simply disappear without anyone taking responsibility for his disappearance or being answerable to their next of kin,” Mahlangu said.

A case against a man accused of kidnap, assault and  rape of a woman has been postponed to next week. The man is also accused of bestiality involving his dogs and the female victim in Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria.

Gauteng's housing disparity

Gauteng has the highest number of urban people living in makeshift homes that include shacks set up in sprawling informal settlements.
According to the Centre of Housing Rights and Eviction, most of the 7.5million people who lacked adequate housing live in Gauteng.
Stakeholders from a variety of sectors gathered at an indaba to discuss the existing issues pertaining to housing, such as provision of shelter for migrants in Gauteng cities.

A recent judgment against spanking children has led to a local church that was previously revealed to “advocate for the use of corporal punishment” seeking legal counsel on implications for it in its fight with the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
Joshua Generation’s Sunningdale-based church was investigated by SAHRC last year for publishing a parenting manual, “Raising Children - Transformation through Truth”.
