Hearing On Eldorado Park Racial Protests Set To Begin – SAHRC

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will to day begin with a four day investigative hearing from 10 to 13 October 2017, in response to complaints it has received regarding distraction of schooling in Eldorado Park and the surrounding area.

Last week, residents in the area embarked on a strike protesting following the appointment of black principal at Klipspruit-West Secondary School.

In a statement issued by the education department states that: “the main concerns are over the appointment process and the procedures followed during the principal’s appointment”.
The department said it will be in talks with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, seeking an investigation over the appointment of the new principal.

Residents of the Eldorado Park and the surrounding areas, organizations, interested groups and the Gauteng provincial and local government have been invited to make written and oral submission seeks to promote social cohesion in Eldorado Park and through the process to protect the rights of vulnerable groups such as learners.

Residents took their anger to the K43 road to show dissatisfaction and also disrupted learning which resulted in a total shut down in the area.

Community members agreed that teaching would resume with immediate effect following repeated disruptions since July 21, infrastructure development MEC Jacob Mamabolo declared in a statement.
“I am delighted that we had a progressive meeting with the committee, and MEC Panyaza Lesufi, will also be pleased about the outcome,” he said.

Since then, the Gauteng education department approached the (SAHRC) to launch an investigations of racism in the area.

The department stated that allegations of corruption and mismanagement will be considered.
