SAHRC to investigate EC water concerns

23 February 2022

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), in the Eastern Cape, has launched an investigation into the quality of tap water in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMBM) and Buffalo City Municipality (BCM).

The Commission says the investigation will allow it to engage the two metropolitans on tap water-related concerns.

On Monday evening NMB issued a statement saying that the Metro's water was unsafe for human consumption.

On the following day, the BCM followed suit by raising concerns about the quality of drinking water deteriorating.

Both Metro's asked residents to boil their water for cooking and drinking purposes.

Provincial Manager, Dr Eileen Carter, says it has also received several complaints including one from the Democratic Alliance.

She says they will now be investigated by putting these concerns to the relevant stakeholders.

Dr Carter says the commission is encouraging members of the public who want to also lay complaints to come forward.

"We also do encourage members of the public who have concerns in respect of any potential human rights violation to contact our offices," she added.
