The South African Human Rights Commission’s (“the Commission”) office in the Western Cape will host a meeting of strategic stakeholders regarding challenges encountered by persons with Albinism in accessing certain rights. Persons with Albinism have reported experiencing various challenges relating to their condition. Albinism is a condition which affects 1 in 4000 persons in Southern Africa. Albinism is characterized by hypopigmentation or lack of pigmentation of the hair, skin and eyes, giving persons with albinism a striking, ethereal appearance.

The North West Provincial Office of the Commission (NWPO) will commemorate National Human Rights Day on 20 March 2024. The aim of the commemoration is to remember and celebrate the contribution of past and present-day human rights defenders in advancing human rights in South Africa and the North West Province in particular.

The North West Provincial Office of the Commission will convene a follow-up dialogue with the Traditional Leaders from Barolong boo Ratshidi under the leadership of the Paramount Chief Kgosi Montshioa. The dialogue will be convened under the theme “Bridging the gap between human rights and traditional customs.”

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will be embarking on various monitoring and inspection activities in the O R Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities. This is in accordance with section 184 (1) (b) and (c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa that; the Commission must protect, monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.

This is in accordance with section 184 (1) (c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa that; the South African Human Commission must monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.

The relentless attacks on the lives and credentials of black women in positions of authority could, if not scrutinised, pose a challenge to the extent to which affirmative action, equity and diversity programmes are lauded.

The resignation of Prof Claudine Gay from the position of president of Harvard University – only six months into her tenure – resonated wretchedly for many historically and currently marginalised people and communities across the world. Prof Gay is the first black, and second woman president in Harvard University’s 400-year history.

THE Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission and the South African Human Rights Commission SAHRC have found that lapses in intelligence along with the police constraints and ability to deal with the 2021 July unrest. This was revealed at the release of both their reports into the 2021 July unrest in Durban yesterday. The SAHRC findings also indicated that the 2021 unrest was a carefully orchestrated event but the cause could not be found and no link could be established to the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.

THE SA Human Rights Commission SAHRC is seeking to make school uniforms affordable, including getting the Department of Basic Education DBE to control the procurement of school uniforms and to provide for the wearing of gendernonconforming outfits to accommodate diverse gender identities. The commission has raised concerns that the cost of school uniforms can be prohibitive, leading to a lack of access to education for some pupils. This can be seen as a form of discrimination and a violation of their right to dignity. The Competition Commission revealed that it had received regular complaints about the cost of school uniforms, saying the increasing costs are largely as a result of anticompetitive behaviour, where a school forces parents to procure uniforms from one supplier.

ALMOST nine years later, six Chatsworth families who were moved from a block of flats to park homes, are still waiting to move back or for the promise of freestanding houses to be delivered on. The residents said the park homes were erected on a primary school ground in Westcliff, due to the homes "collapsing" and a failing sewerage system. Christina Pillay, 81, shares a tworoom park home with her daughter Rosanne Singh, 47, soninlaw, and 12yearold grandson. Singh said they were told that it would take six months for the repairs to be completed at the flats. "But nine years later we are still waiting to go back to our flat. "While we are grateful to have a shelter, how much longer are we expected to wait to have a proper roof over our heads? "My son sleeps on a couch in the same room as my mother.
