On the 14th September 2017, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) in collaboration with the CRL Commission, PANSALB, and the WITS Language school, will be hosting a dialogue on the Recognition of South African Sign Language (SASL) as an official language. The dialogue will be held at the South African Human Rights Commission offices in Braamfontein. The theme of the event is: MAKE IT HAPPEN, SASL OFFICIALISATION.
The programme for the event is set to begin at 09h00 and will continue until 13H00. The dialogue will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the basic rights of the Deaf community and the role that South African Sign Language will play in ensuring that society is inclusive of Deaf People. This dialogue forms part of a countrywide campaign to promote the recognition by government of SASL as the 12th official South African language.
