Media Advisory: Subpoena Hearing Against the Executive Mayor of Matlosana to continue on 09 February 2026

Attention: Editors and Reporters
6 February 2026

The subpoena hearing against the Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana (“Matlosana”), Councillor Fikile Mahlophe (“Mahlophe”), is scheduled to continue on 9 February 2026. The first sitting of the hearing was convened on 12 January 2026, but could not conclude due to the need for the hearing of further evidence.

The hearing arises from an investigation into a complaint lodged with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/ the Commission) on 2 September 2025, concerning the alleged non-provision of free paraffin to indigent households by Matlosana. The complaint alleges that the supply of free paraffin to qualifying indigent residents was halted following the appointment of Councillor Mahlophe. The hearing was convened after Councillor Mahlophe failed to respond to correspondence sent to him by the Commission in relation to this matter.

The details of the hearing are as follows:
Date: 9 February 2026
Time: 9:00 am
Venue: SAHRC’s North West Offices, 25 Heystek Street, Rustenburg

The hearing will be open to the media. Members of the public who want to attend must RSVP by contacting Emmanuel Nkonde at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The hearing will also be live-streamed on the Commission’s YouTube channel @https://www.youtube.com/@SAHRC1, and proceedings will be shared on all SAHRC platforms.
