Media Briefing Invite: SAHRC Eastern Cape to release report on allegations of use of live ammunition during a 2024 Student Protest at Walter Sisulu University

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/the Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will on Thursday, 04 December 2025, release its Report on the Inquiry into the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Protest of May 2024.

The report outlines the Commission’s findings on the events surrounding the protest, including the escalation of the incident, the response of law-enforcement, and the implications for students’ rights and public-order management. It also sets out recommendations aimed at strengthening accountability and improving the handling of protests in higher-education spaces.

The Commission confirms that all submissions received from relevant institutions were considered in finalising the report.
