Media Advisory: South African Human Rights Commission conducts provincial visit in Limpopo

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Monday, 09 June 2025

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission/SAHRC) will conduct a week-long provincial visit in Limpopo to monitor the state of human rights. The visit will be led by Advocate Sandra Makoasha, SAHRC Commissioner responsible for Pro-Human Rights Budgeting, Business and Human Rights, and Health.

Commissioner Makoasha will embark on a number of activities and interventions aimed at intensifying the promotion, protection, and monitoring the observance of human rights to strengthen constitutional democracy, consistent with section 184(1) of the Constitution. Coupled with complaints received by the SAHRC’s provincial office.

As such the week-long activities are designed to strengthen relationships with stakeholders; liaison with the Limpopo Provincial Government and local municipalities, particularly on pro-poor human rights budgeting and the Integrated Development Planning (IDP) process; and monitor service delivery, including at health care facilities and courts.

Amongst others, the visit will include Tshilidzini Hospital in Shayandima. This follows from a visit by the Commission to the hospital in June 2024 where the Commission noted the deteriorating state of the facility. Since then, the Department has committed to addressing staff shortage and infrastructure issues. Further, the Commission will visit various Equality Courts in the province, including the Mankweng Equality Court.

These visits are aimed at enhancing access justice and evaluating the accessibility of the courts. Commissioner Makoasha is also set to give a lecture on Access to Justice as a Human Right – details of this lecture will be shared in due course.

In addition, Commissioner Makoasha and the Limpopo Provincial Office are set to meet with the Speaker of the Provincial Legislature, to reiterate the oversight role played by the Legislature, and how this role can be mutually beneficial. The Commission will also present systemic challenges and issues of concern contained in its various inquiry reports released in the recent years.
