The inquiry, launched in response to persistent complaints regarding inadequate, unreliable, and unsafe scholar transport, seeks to determine the extent of scholar transport challenges in the North West, accountability for these challenges, and the redress required to address the challenge, amongst others.
In earlier sittings held in March and April 2025, the Commission heard extensive oral and written submissions from a range of stakeholders, including civil society organisations, affected communities, and service providers. While the MEC was excused from the second sitting, he gave partial evidence at the first sitting of the inquiry. This third sitting of the inquiry aims to conclude the MEC’s evidence, which is critical in assessing the Department's role in addressing the crisis.
The outcome of this inquiry will inform a comprehensive report with findings and recommendations aimed at ensuring that all learners, especially those in marginalised areas, can access safe, dignified, and reliable transport in accordance with their constitutional rights.
The second leg of the investigative inquiry is scheduled as follows:
- Date: 14 May 2025
