Media Statement: SAHRC North West Provincial Office holds final sitting of inquiry into scholar transport challenges in the North West Province

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Tuesday, 13 May 2025

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) North West Provincial Office (NWPO) will resume the third and final sitting of its investigative inquiry into the state of scholar transport in the province. This sitting will specifically focus on finalising the oral evidence of the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety and Transport Management (COSATMA).

The inquiry, launched in response to persistent complaints regarding inadequate, unreliable, and unsafe scholar transport, seeks to determine the extent of scholar transport challenges in the North West, accountability for these challenges, and the redress required to address the challenge, amongst others.

In earlier sittings held in March and April 2025, the Commission heard extensive oral and written submissions from a range of stakeholders, including civil society organisations, affected communities, and service providers. While the MEC was excused from the second sitting, he gave partial evidence at the first sitting of the inquiry.  This third sitting of the inquiry aims to conclude the MEC’s evidence, which is critical in assessing the Department's role in addressing the crisis.

The outcome of this inquiry will inform a comprehensive report with findings and recommendations aimed at ensuring that all learners, especially those in marginalised areas, can access safe, dignified, and reliable transport in accordance with their constitutional rights.

The second leg of the investigative inquiry is scheduled as follows:

  • Date: 14 May 2025
  • Place: 25 Heystek Street, Rustenburg
  • Time: 9h00am

The inquiry will be open to the media. Members of the public who want to attend must RSVP by contacting Leano Modikoe at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The inquiry will also be live-streamed on the Commission’s YouTube channel @https://www.youtube.com/@SAHRC1, and proceedings will be shared on all SAHRC platforms.
