Joint Media Statement: Message of condolences on the passing away of Pope Francis, the Head of the Catholic Church

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of the Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) have learnt with a sense of great loss and sadness about the passing away of Pope Francis, the Head of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis was a true advocate and voice for peace, universal equality, and reconciliation, which he demonstrated through the power of love, humility and faith. Indeed, he was a fearless and outspoken religious leader who used his stature to advance the realisation of human rights. He criticised all forms of injustice targeted against the poor and marginalised in many parts of the world.

In his practice of faith, demonstration of moral courage, conviction and service to humanity, he called for freedom and support for all communities whose lives were inextricably impacted by the existential daily challenges of poverty, hunger and violence. He taught us to always emulate the values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and positive ethical pursuits, which can guide everyone in ensuring that no one is discriminated against by the denial of their rights or human dignity because of their cultural, religious, and linguistic orientation.

The CRL Rights Commission and the SAHRC extend condolences to the Catholic community and everyone who has been touched by his life. Let us use this time of mourning Pope Francis to remember his teachings and contribution towards a better world that is centred on human rights.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN ETERNAL PEACE.
