Media Advisory: SAHRC’s Western Cape Provincial Office hosts a stakeholder engagement to discuss identified systemic challenges with the allocation of housing in the Western Cape

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Tuesday, 25 February 2025

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/the Commission) Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) will host stakeholder engagement to analyse challenges in the allocation of housing in the province in accordance with the Housing Demand Database as identified through complaints received by the Provincial Office.

Among others, the engagement will focus on inter-provincial migration, an influx of non-nationals into the Western Cape, and the impact these have on the system to meet the demand for access to adequate housing. The housing backlog is indicative of a systemic failure requiring attention.

The WPO has identified the need to urgently remedy these challenges to ensure that the right to access to adequate housing can be sustainably accomplished in line with the international obligations undertaken with the Sustainable Development Goals and the fast-approaching 2030 deadline.

The engagement will take place as follows:

  • Date  :  25 and 26 February 2025
  • Venue: Western Cape Provincial Office, 3rd floor, One Thibault, 1 Long Street, Cape Town
  • Time  : 08h00 – 15h00

Key stakeholders expected to attend the engagement include; Commissioner Aseza Gungubele, SAHRC Commissioner responsible for the Western Cape, Human Settlement, Migration and Climate Justice; local and provincial government, academia and civil society.
