Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape Provincial Office to conduct a human rights engagement with the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Wednesday, 29 January 2025

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/the Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will host a strategic stakeholder engagement with the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature to strengthen working relationship between the two institutions.

This engagement seeks to establish a formal relationship with the Provincial Legislature, which plays a crucial oversight role in the functioning of the provincial departments, as well as the promotion and protection of human rights within the province.

The session will focus on addressing systemic human rights challenges identified by the ECPO and emphasise the need for government intervention to mitigate and resolve these violations. Additionally, the engagement will provide the Provincial Legislature with an overview of the most prevalent human rights complaints in the province, highlight unresponsive government stakeholders, and present general human rights trends observed during the 2023/2024 financial year.

Section 181(3) of the Constitution mandates that all organs of state cooperate with and provide the necessary support to Chapter 9 institutions, such as the Commission, to enable them to effectively perform their functions. These responsibilities include ensuring appropriate redress for human rights violations, promoting awareness of human rights, reviewing government policies, advocating for legislative reform, monitoring and evaluating government performance.

Furthermore, the Constitution assigns the Provincial Legislature a critical oversight role. It is tasked with monitoring and supporting provincial departments and municipalities to ensure they fulfil their constitutional obligations and deliver on their mandates effectively.

The strategic stakeholder engagement will be held as follows:

  • Date: Wednesday, 29 January 2025
  • Time: 15H00 – 16H30
  • Venue: Microsoft Teams

Ends
