Media Advisory: SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Office will host deaf awareness campaign at the University of the Witwatersrand

The South African Human Rights Commission Gauteng provincial office (GPO) will host a Deaf Awareness campaign at The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg on 29 September 2022.

The United Nations International Day of Sign Languages takes place on 23 September each year and International Week of the Deaf is commemorated from Monday to Sunday during the last full week of September.

The campaign is aimed at promoting awareness of the rights of Deaf persons in South Africa and to help raise awareness about the language, culture, and diversity of the Deaf community; to raise awareness of the isolation that deaf people can occasionally experience, and promote the importance of social inclusion around the deaf community.
