Media Release: The SAHRC Free State Provincial Office will conduct a human rights dialogue on the rights of farming communities in Memel and Vrede farms in Phumelela Local Municipality

Date: 28 September 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The SAHRC Free State Provincial Office has received several complaints including amongst others the illegal farm evictions of occupants protected by ESTA and the pounding of livestock by farm owners.

The provincial office will conduct a human rights dialogue with the communities and some stakeholders in Memel and Vrede Farms in Phumelela Local Municipality. The SAHRC is concerned about innumerable violations of human rights violations and socio-economic rights faced by Memel and Vrede Farm Communities which needs immediate intervention from government institutions. One of the major human rights violations encountered is the fact that black livestock owners who are occupants and or employees in these farms are being subjected to illegal processes resulting in the pounding of their livestock by privately owned pounds.  This status quo seems to continue and nothing is happening to address the situation from the authorities (SAPS and Municipality).

The Human Rights Dialogue will take place as follows:

  • Venue: Memel Community Hall
  • Date:  29 September 2022
  • Time: 10h00

 - Ends –
