Media Advisory: SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to Host the National School Moot Court Competition Provincial Final Rounds

The National Schools Moot Court Competition was established in 2011 as a joint project of the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and the Foundation for Human Rights. In 2019 the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) took over the competition as its flagship human rights advocacy project and successfully implemented same.

As part of the competition Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners from all districts are required to write an essay on a hypothetical problem involving constitutional issues as part of the English curriculum. Subsequently, ten teams from each province, who then participate in the provincial rounds, with the top four teams from each province proceeding to the national oral rounds to determine the top two teams for the final round of the competition. During the provincial final rounds, participants argue their case before judges in an actual court setting.

The Northern Cape Provincial Final Rounds is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date    : Saturday, 10 September 2022
Venue : Kimberley Magistrate Court, Kimberley
Time   : 08:00 AM – 15:00 PM

The Northern Cape Provincial Final Rounds will be held in conjunction with the following partners:

•    The Northern Cape Department of Education
•    The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development
•    Legal Aid SA
