Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to hold a stakeholder engagement with the Amathole District Municipality on the vandalism of water infrastructure

05 September 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission, Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) is concerned about the reported strike action that has been allegedly undertaken by Amathole District Municipality (ADM) officials pertaining to wage disputes. Media reports have indicated that the said strike action has, amongst other things, resulted in the sabotaging of water infrastructure, which consequently has negatively affected communities and services at large. The Constitution provides that Local Government structures have the objective to ensure the provision of services to communities in a sustainable manner and to promote a safe and healthy environment.

On the 5th of September 2022, and against the abovementioned concerns outlined, a stakeholder engagement with the ADM has been scheduled. Representatives from the Trade Union of employees; the Office of the Premier, as well as the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs have also been invited to this engagement. The engagement will be chaired by Commissioner P Ntuli, and will be preceded by an inspection to the affected areas of concern.

The engagement was requested with the relevant stakeholders prior to this week’s National Conference on Local Governance in which HE President Cyril Ramaphosa also made specific mention of the alleged concerns unfolding within the ADM. The Commission wishes to underscore the importance of service delivery of local government in the realisation of the basic human rights of our communities.

The stakeholder engagement will take place as follows:

Date: 5th of September 2022

Time:  14H00 – 16H00

Venues: Microsoft Teams
