Media Advisory: The SAHRC and CRL Rights Commission host a National Conference on Local Governance

The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC) has noted myriad systemic challenges within the sphere of local government, which hinder the attainment and enjoyment of human rights. As part of its responses to these challenges, the SAHRC and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) will be hosting a National Conference on Local Governance under the theme, “Local Government, Accountability, Service Delivery, and Human Rights.” The hosting of the conference is in line with the SAHRC’s and CRL Rights Commission’s mandate to promote, protect and monitor the observance of human and community rights in South Africa.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC) has noted myriad systemic challenges within the sphere of local government, which hinder the attainment and enjoyment of human rights. As part of its responses to these challenges, the SAHRC and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) will be hosting a National Conference on Local Governance under the theme, “Local Government, Accountability, Service Delivery, and Human Rights.” The hosting of the conference is in line with the SAHRC’s and CRL Rights Commission’s mandate to promote, protect and monitor the observance of human and community rights in South Africa.
The conference aims to provide a platform for optimum representation of critical voices and role-players on the topic of local government accountability. The National Conference will be a platform for a broad cross-section of stakeholders to collaboratively deliberate on the key systemic challenges facing local government. In addition, it aims to come up with solutions intended at addressing and tackling the deteriorating state of service delivery within the local sphere of government.
The National Conference will commence on 31 August to 01 September 2022.
On 01 September 2022, the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency, Honourable Mr Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his reflections on the state of the sphere of local government.
Government ministers, municipalities, Chapter 9 institutions, civil society, community members and other stakeholders will participate in the conference.
