Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission to visit Krugersdorp following crisis in the area

05 August 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) led by its Chairperson Adv Bongani Majola will on Saturday 06 August 2022 visit Matholesville and Kagiso in Krugersdorp following reports of a crisis in the area.

The Commission has publicly denounced continued gender-based violence in its statement following the rape of young women aged between 19 and 37 years, in Krugersdorp. Since then, ensuing retaliation by some communities, and protest action has triggered the need for the Commission to visit the area. The Commission is concerned that the acts of criminality which has plagued some communities for a long period of time may result in some taking the law into their own hands. Such actions are unlikely to resolve concerns but will instead heighten criminality and instability.

The Commission will engage with stakeholders including members of the community and the SAPS.
