Media Statement: The South African Human Rights Commission to probe remarks attributed to the Branch Secretary of NEHAWU

20 June 2022
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) has opened an own accord investigation into a leaked audio recording in which the UNISA Principal and Vice-Chancellor and other women staff members are threatened with molestation and violence.

According to the City Press article, Mr Thembani Baloyi allegedly made lewd and derogatory remarks against the Vice Chancellor and women staff whilst addressing protesting workers affiliated with the union at Unisa’s main campus in Pretoria.  While the Commission accepts that individuals must be given the freedom to form and express opinions without restraint on a wide range of matters, allegations about offensive and controversial expressions cannot be condoned or left unattended.
