Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission to host a media briefing in the build up to the 2nd National Conference on Racism

18 June 2021
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) will hold a media briefing on Monday 21 June 2021. The purpose of the briefing will be to discuss the 2nd National Conference on Racism to be convened by the SAHRC on the 22nd of June 2021.

South Africa has reached the milestone of 25 years of the Constitution. This provides an opportune time to reflect on how the country at large has fared in meeting the constitutional ambitions of non-racism, diversity and social cohesion, and sustainable transformation.

This Conference is particularly timely, as complaints on unfair discrimination on the basis of race still remains the most prominent issue in respect of which the SAHRC receives complaints from the public.

The conference will be convened under the theme “Towards Social Cohesion, Non-racialism, and the Eradication of Racial Polarisation and Tension”.  Key topical issues such as the state of inequality and the continued legacy of segregation will be discussed. Additionally, recent developments such as that of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act Amendment Bill will also be discussed. Further details will be provided in the media briefing.

The media briefing will take place as follows, Join as an attendee: https://sahrc1.webex.com/sahrc1/onstage/g.php?MTID=e36b93c64f8a2fb9c339dabf6b4bf027c
