Media Advisory: SAHRC Limpopo Provincial office to conduct a provincial provincial hearing into the status of sewage and pollution challenges within Mookgophong Local Municipality

The SAHRC Limpopo provincial office will be conducting a provincial hearing into the status of sewage and pollution challenges within Mookgophong on the 26th and 27th of November 2020. The SAHRC has received several complaints against the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality relating to the alleged mismanagement of sewerage within the area.

The Responses of the Municipality received by the SAHRC has not been seen to address and resolve the challenges of the community in the short and medium term. The SAHRC has also inspected the area on several occasions and very little to no improvement has been noted despite request for intervention. In some areas, conditions have worsened.

On the 26th of November 2020, community members as well as formal complainants have been invited to give evidence before the SAHRC. The SAHRC has also called upon the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs as well as the Office of the Premier to appear before it and provide evidence under oath on the first day of the hearing proceedings.

On the second day of proceedings, the Waterberg District Municipality, as well as the Respondent, the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality has been called to provide evidence under oath.
The aim of this Provincial Hearing is to make findings into whether the Modimolle- Mookgophong Municipality has violated residents’ right to water and a clean environment as enshrined in the Constitution. In the event of an adverse finding, the inquiry will aim to make recommendations on appropriate redress.
