The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) congratulates President Cyril Ramaphosa on his inauguration as Head of State. His poignant speech has significantly added a mood of great hope among South Africans. The Commission is optimistic for a more enabling environment for Chapter 9 institutions, not only to support constitutional democracy but also to assist the government in fulfilling its obligations to respect, protect, promote and fulfil the human rights in the Constitution.
Our constitutional mandate as the Commission is to promote the realisation and protection of the rights of all people in our country. We wish the President and the government much success, as we commit to monitoring their plans and actions in fulfilling all human rights in the country. The Commission looks forward to working with the President and his new government to rebuild our constitutional state which was at risk.
As one of the founders of our democracy and its Constitution, we are confident that President Ramaphosa will ensure that all constitutional institutions play their roles optimally towards a fully functional constitutional order.
Together we have the duty to realise the socio-economic rights enshrined in our Constitution to rid our people of poverty, inequality and unemployment. As a country we have indeed committed ourselves to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, a mere 11 years from now. Proper, efficient and corruption free service delivery by President Ramaphosa’ s government is essential and indispensable to meet these challenges and to ensure true freedom for our people. In this respect the Commission will continue to measure and monitor the new administration in respect of our Bill of Rights.
