The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) Gauteng provincial office will convene the second part of the hearings relating to the investigation into allegations of unfair discrimination, racism, sexism and harassment at the University of South Africa (UNISA) from 12 – 16 March 2018.
The hearing started on 20 February 2018 following a request from the UNISA’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Mandla Makhanya, to investigate allegations of unfair discrimination, racism, sexism and harassment at the UNISA College of Law.
The Commission invited the presence of staff members at the College of Law, unions and management at UNISA at the beginning of the hearing, to present oral and written submissions to the investigation panel. Staff members, interested parties and the UNISA management, who have not presented their oral testimonies to the panel will be afforded an opportunity to do so. Those expected to make oral submissions include only those with notifications in this regard.
Following allegations of widespread racism and lack of transformation at UNISA, the Commission has decided to broaden the scope of the investigation to cover the entire institution. The Commission invites all staff members at the institution to make written submissions in this regard before 18 April 2018.
