Head of KZN Health Department Musa Gumede told the commission that millions have been spent on efforts to deal with oncology problems in the province.

JOHANNESBURG - The head of the KwaZulu-Natal’s Health Department has told the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) that close to R40 million has been spent in the past two years to try and deal with the backlog of cancer treatment for patients in the province.

According to the SAHRC website, the commission has initiated Equality Court proceedings against the farm-owner and his family.

On 09 April 2018 the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or SAHRC) initiated an investigation at Tembisa Hospital following media reports of patients being subjected to inhumane treatment at the hands of hospital staff.  Arising allegations indicate that the provision of healthcare services at the hospital have been substandard.  At the crux of the investigation are allegations that patients are made to sleep on the floor, there are unreasonable delays in providing healthcare services, there is a shortage of medication and qualified staff and patients are ill-treated.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Gauteng Provincial Office) has initiated Equality Court proceedings against Springs farm owner and his family. On 9th December 2017, the family allegedly forced an employee to drink litres of faecal matter before attempting to drown him in a septic tank on their farm. It is alleged that the farm in question has been the site of continuous human rights violations.

 The MEC of Health for KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Hon. Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, will appear before the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC, the Commission) at a hearing on the oncology crisis in KZN. The Hearing is scheduled for 14 May 2018 at 10h00 at the Commission’s Head office in Braamfontein.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) strongly condemns the gruesome attack and acts of arson which took place on Thursday, 10 May 2018 at a mosque in Verulam in the KwaZulu Natal Province in which a man was killed and two others badly injured. The Commission is dismayed at these actions which display a flagrant disregard for constitutionally enshrined rights to life, dignity and freedom of religion.
