The Supreme Court of Appeal has on Wednesday been hearing a bid from AfriForum to overturn an Equality Court ruling declaring displays of the flag to be hate speech.

AfriForum faced off against the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the South African Human Rights Commission in the court in Bloemfontein today, to try and overturn the 2019 ruling.

Commission to monitor Mogalakwena municipality

    For months residents of Mogalakwena in Limpopo have had to put up with a broken sewage system.
    After failing to get the municipality to fix the problem, they asked the Human Rights Commission to step in.
    The municipality has submitted a plan to the Commission which will be monitored.

Residents of Mogalakwena in Limpopo have asked the Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for help getting the municipality to fix a broken sewage system which has left sewage running in the streets.
The SAHRC will further conduct a follow up inspection at Greenville Primary School on the same day

The Mpumalanga Provincial Office (MPO), in collaboration with Community Advice Office South Africa (CAOSA), will be hosting a Human Rights capacity building workshop in Mpumalanga.  The workshop is aimed at capacitating the Commission’s human rights champions and CAOSA coordinators to be able to conduct monitoring and submit reports on human rights violations in their localities.

The South African Human Rights Commission has sadly learned of the untimely death of Professor Barry Hanyane. Professor Hanyane died on 11 May 2022 in hospital in Johannesburg. Prof Hanyane was an Associate Professor at the North West University in the Department of Public Management and Administration.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) was first  commemorated in 2004 to raise awareness of the violence and discrimination faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, including all people who have diverse gender identities or gender expressions. The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. The theme for 2022 is ‘Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Rights’.
