POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Education was recently ordered by the Seshego Equality Court to pay R60 000 in personal compensation to Nare Mphela, a transgender woman from Moletjie, Ga-Matlala.

With various civil society organisations and political parties mobilising to stage protests on Friday, 7 April 2017, the South African Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned by comments, made in the media in recent days, which seem to encourage the use of violence in contravention of the law and disregard of entrenched constitutional rights.

Every year South Africans celebrate Human Rights Day on March 21 to commemorate the 1960 Sharpeville massacre when police opened fire on a crowd killing 69 unarmed people. They were protesting against the humiliating pass laws that controlled the movement of black people.

Besides a reminder of a dark period in the country’s history, this day also celebrates South Africa’s unique and highly acclaimed constitution. Its Bill of Rights guarantees human dignity and equal rights to all citizens.

The Western Cape Departments of Human Settlements and Social Development, together with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) had on Thursday announced a commitment to their plans to improve human rights for people with disabilities and special needs, at a media briefing held in Cape Town.

The South African Human Rights Commission convened a multi-sectoral stakeholder’s conference on racism from 14 - 15 March 2016 in Midrand, Johannesburg.
