 The Mafube Municipality in the Free State has once again come under the spotlight.

This after the DA in the province requested the South African Human Rights Commission to launch investigations into the municipality’s lack of service delivery and inadequate sanitation. It is alleged that the municipality, still in the red with Eskom, is failing to provide its residents with clean running water. This is coupled with allegations of sewage water overflowing in many of its towns. In a statement, the party says the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) should also be investigated following their failure to improve the functioning of the municipality after placing it under administration earlier this year.

A three-day dialogue session on human rights came to a close on 17 November 2017 with a call to protect and promote human rights as Zimbabwe prepares to hold the 2018 elections. Conducted by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, the highlight of the workshop was on the need to revisit with a perspective to review, reform and align Section 133H of the Electoral Act which create Special Investigative Committee that mandates the ZHRC to collaborate with duty bearers such as the ZRP, Political parties who may be in some instances perpetrators of electoral violence. Consensus was noted that the above provisions compromise the independence of the ZHRC. Stakeholders also commenced the development an election strategy to ensure that the elections are conducted in an atmosphere that protects and promotes the human rights of all citizens.

Hundreds of passionate community members gathered at Athlone Stadium yesterday as the religious fraternity led the Unsilence Violence Protest march from the stadium down Klipfontein Road Corridor towards Jakes Gerwel Drive.
It was organised by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and partner organisations as an acknowledgement of the gender-based violence pandemic.
