JOHANNESBURG – The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it plans on being a mediator between disadvantaged communities and the relevant government departments on issues of service delivery.The commission held its first day of an inquiry into service delivery in Alexandra on Thursday.

The South African Human Rights Commission is calling for an investigation into the conduct of an Emfuleni Municipal official. The South African Human Rights Commission has called for the Emfuleni municipality to investigate allegations that a municipal official was involved in soliciting funds from unlawful land occupiers in the Rust-Ter-Vaal informal settlement in return for their continued residence on the land.
ANC chairperson of Emfuleni municipality’s ward 16, Madoda Mkhombeni, has come under fire with other ANC members after it was reported that they were behind land invasions in the area.

This was due to system faults as there were no regular station and cell inspections by people independent of the SAPS to ensure detainees were held and treated in accordance with the law.

Last week, magistrate John Sanders found Phumlani Mfeka and Zweli Sangweni of the Mazibuye African Forum guilty of hate speech for comments made in articles and interviews in 2013/14.
