As uncertainty and fear grows amid the Covid-19 virus outbreak, some farms in the Western Cape are closing their doors. This could see hundreds if not thousands of seasonal farm workers like Elizabeth Pietersen without means to provide for their families.

The high court in Pretoria has ordered that the justice minister provide witness protection for whistleblower Thabiso Zulu.
The order was made after the South African Human Rights Commission went to court to assist Zulu, a close friend of slain ANC Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa.

DA interim federal leader John Steen­huisen has threatened to institute legal action against the Msunduzi Municipality for exposing residents to health hazards by failing to maintain the toxic New England Road landfill site. Steenhuisen, who conducted an oversight visit to the dump on Tuesday, said the DA would be writing to Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Creecy, calling for the national government to intervene. “We will have to force the municipality to comply with regulations and, if needs be, and as last resort, we will consider partnering those individuals who will be instituting legal action against the Msunduzi Municipality,” he said.

Commission hears evidence on steps taken to stop attacks on foreign truck drivers

An NPA state advocate has told the SAHRC investigation that in some instances foreign truck drivers are too scared to approach the police when they are attacked because their status as foreign nationals will be uncovered.

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) believes its case against the owners of the Beloftebos wedding venue is important enough to be heard by a full bench in the Western Cape High Court, where it launched a court application on Monday.
"This is obviously a case that will not only be applicable to wedding venues," commissioner André Gaum said.

Megan Watling and Sasha-Lee Heekes were told that the Beloftebos Wedding Venue would not host their special day in April 2021, because of their sexual orientation.
