The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/the Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) has issued a subpoena directing the Executive Mayor of Makana Local Municipality, Yandiswa Vara, and the Municipal Manager, Pumelelo Kate, to appear before the Commission in terms of section 15(1)(c) and (d) of the South African Human Rights Commission Act 40 of 2013 (SAHRC Act).

The SAHRC will make submissions on Thursday, 14 August 2025 on constitutional issues that have significant implications for land rights and traditional governance in South Africa.
